Note to Press:

As parents it isn’t always enough to ‘do our best’-
our best may not enable us to meet the needs of our children, however
much we want it to.
Someone needs to stand up and speak up for those children, and offer
parents the information, knowledge and skills that will help them
be great role models.
That 'someone' is The Child Listener™

Emma Hartnell-Baker- known as The Child Listener™ is a highly experienced practitioner and specialised in this topic within her Masters Degree, in addition to qualifying as a Life Coach in 2002. She takes a life coaching approach to behaviour change- ie that people first start looking within and being the best person they can be- and leading by example. If we don’t consciously make ‘self-learning’ and ‘the development of emotional intelligence’ a part of our daily life, then society will continue as it is. We can change society for our children- if we take ownership of our own part in it today.

Before she left the UK she was being asked to take part in documentaries- as The Child Listener™- and is great for tv as she doesn't take a softly softly approach all the time- and 'sticks up' for kids. People like listening to her- and she usually evoke strong feelings one way or another. For example she was asked to be involved in a documetary about overweight children- because she was known to take a clear stance on it- that this is child abuse! However she wanted to move to AU and have a life she believed would be better for her own child so declined all offers. This Bulletin piece was the first thing Emma has done since moving here and isn't sure it offer readers an accurate view of what she does.

She is known as ‘The Child Listener’- which is in the process of being trademarked- because her focus is on meeting the needs of children- and protecting their rights as human beings. Bystanders will often become more incensed over a dog being shouted at than they would a child. People can become parents with no knowledge or experience and that child is born into that environment through no fault of their own. She believes that if people should get a licence to own a dog, they should have to at least participate at some level in workshops and trained geared to becoming a great parent. It should be compulsory- not because we are telling parents how to parent using one method, but to offer different strategies and ideas- which they can then run with and moderate according to their own families. Most parents don’t want to be angry at their kids, hit them, ignore them- they don’t know any other way. The Child Listener™ will be setting in place systems- workshops, courses, free support groups- that enable people to learn about emotional intelligence- and believes that if people don’t feel they are being judged, they want to learn more and to make changes – and will come. She thinks that attending at least one workshop each year should be compulsory for everyone and would question any parent who wouldnt attend even if there was a slim chance they might gain some new knowledge.

She is an articulate, vivacious person who is passionate about children. She feels her time is best spent with groups of people rather than on a 1:1 and is planning her schedule for 2010- and will be talking to program makers with suggestions of documentaries and programs she feels would be good viewing- and also relevant to today’s society. We are a society that wants to punish poor behaviour. Instead, she would want to ensure there are consequences, and also put systems and programs in place that will help that individual learn alternatives- to become a productive member of society in the future. There is always a debate about punishment versus reform- can’t we have both?
With children this is even more important as children can change their approach to life and behaviours far more easily. We need to hold them accountable for their actions- but also help them learn other ways, to choose different behaviours, and to be happier individuals. If we don’t teach them, and aren’t great role models, how do we expect this to happen? Programs such as Super Nanny are welcomed- and in many ways useful- however they don’t really even touch on teaching children alternatives, or encourage parents to really listen to children. How many times do we see a child screaming in a supermarket and the parents are choosing to ignore the child. That child doesn’t have to skills to stop the parents calmly as say ’Excuse me Mummy, would you please listen to me for a minute so I can explain why I feel angry with you the moment?’ By ignoring them how are they going to learn those skills- learn to articulate their feelings, learn to deal with not getting what they want, learn to interact positively with others etc.

The Child Listener's approach isn’t new- its just an idea that we go back to focussing on developing relationships and effective communication – consider an idea that as parents our main goal could be to guide our children with kindness and love, and try to teach them how to set the example in a world that appears to becoming more materialistic, angry and narcissistic. As parents it isn’t enough to ‘do our best’- this often isn’t enough for our children- and someone needs to speak up for those children. They need more. They deserve more. She feels that this would be a great series for parents although she believes that everyone should develop 'active listening' skills!

The Child Listener™ wants to spread the word effectively- and with thought. It’s needed and she feel confident that she is someone who can be a part of creating change. Ideally she wants someone to put together a piece that is really useful and relevant.

"Your children will become what you are; so be what you want them to be."
YOU are their main role model- and what you DO and how you BEHAVE
(rather than what you say) teaches them how to be in the world.
If you cant communicate when frustrated by others, without using
personal attacks and without raising your voice, then don't expect them to either.

Do you need to improve on, or learn new skills, to be a better role model?

Then contact The Child Listener™ today!

Let's leave living in judgment and 'being right' at the door- moving forwards
in a positive manner, towards a brighter future"
